Follow and Be Followed

Last week, I travelled to my son’s home in western NY.  I left two hours earlier than usual because a snow storm had been predicted for the afternoon and I wanted to get there before it started.  Halfway there, it started to snow.  It did not just snow a little, it snowed A LOT!  It had started four hours earlier than predicted.

Since I could not see too well, I adopted a strategy of following a truck, a semi to be exact.  I could see its tail-lights clearly.  I thought this was a good strategy because the driver was more experienced than me and the truck was big and would make a pathway for my car’s tires.  It worked on the one highway.  Then I came to a turnoff and there was no truck to follow.  So, I tried keeping up with two cars.  They did not make a good pathway for my tires.  When one of them put on their brakes, so did I.  That’s when my car started to slip and slide.

This experience made me wonder, “Who do I follow in life?”  In Philippians 3:17, Paul says, “Join in following my example, observe those who walk according to the pattern you have in us.”  There have been many men and women in my life who have been good examples of how to live a godly and faithful Christian life.  But what happens when we slide away from the way we should be living?  We can call out to God and say, “Lord, help me and bring me back onto the path!”  That’s what I did when my car started to slide off the road.  I cried out to the Lord to keep me safe and to keep me on the road.  My guardian angels took over and kept me on the road.  Praise God!

Then I wondered about who is following me?  We all have people we follow and others who are following us.  There are people from whom we can learn things and others who can learn things from us.  We are all in different places along our Christian journey.  I pray that those who are watching my life will see a godly example of how to be faithful to God in all circumstances.

A Steve Green song, written by Jon Mohr, “Find Us Faithful,” is my prayer:

We’re pilgrims on the journey
of the narrow road,
and those who’ve gone before us
line the way.
cheering on the faithful,
encouraging the weary,
their lives a stirring testament
to god’s sustaining grace.

Surrounded by so great
a cloud of witnesses,
let us run the race
not only for the prize,
but as those who’ve gone before us.
let us leave to those behind us,
the heritage of faithfulness
passed on thru godly lives.

After all our hopes and dreams
have come and gone,
and our children sift thru all
we’ve left behind,
may the clues that they discover,
and the mem’ries they uncover,
become the light that leads them,
to the road we each must find.

o may all who come behind us
find us faithful,
may the fire of our devotion
light their way.
may the footprints that we leave,
lead them to believe,
and the lives we live
inspire them to obey.
o may all who come behind us
find us faithful.
