All the way back to the Garden, Adam and Eve acted faithlessly.  When the Serpent tempted them to question God’s Word, (Did God actually say, “You shall not eat of any tree in the garden? …You will not surely die.  For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil” Genesis 3:1, 5) they acted faithlessly, eating from the tree God told them NOT to eat.
At Kadesh-Barnea, 10 of the 12 spies returned from spying out Canaan filled with fear (We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are… and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them. Numbers 13:31, 33) and incited Israel to unbelief (Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! Or would that we had died in this wilderness! Why is the Lord bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword Numbers 14:2-3).  They acted faithlessly.
Rebekah, hearing Isaac ask Esau to hunt for game and prepare him a meal that he may eat and bless him (Genesis 27: 5-8), sent Jacob to get young goats from the flock that she may prepare a meal for Jacob to take to Isaac and receive the blessing (…you shall bring it to your father to eat, so that he may bless you before he dies Genesis 27:10). Although God told her when these two boys were still in her womb, Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger (Genesis 25:23); Rebekah acted faithlessly and took matters into her own hands to secure Isaac’s blessing for Jacob.
There are many more illustrations of faithlessness in the Bible.
When I look in the mirror, I see Eve and Israel and Rebekah looking back at me.  I, too, act faithlessly every time I choose my own way, every time I ignore the prompting of the Holy Spirit, every time I choose sin.  Sin results when, in that moment, I lack faith to believe God will be to me all that I need.
Faith is not a compartment in our backpack that we take out to apply in this situation or that. Faith in the Living God should permeate every area of our life, infiltrating our very soul.
Do you remember the Thomas’ English Muffins commercial about the “nooks and crannies” which allowed butter to melt into every part of the muffin? Faith needs to get into every nook and cranny or our mind, heart, soul, and will.
But even when we fail– and we will… …if we are faithless, he remains faithful 2 Timothy 2:13.
The Bible is a book full of man’s faithlessness and God’s faithfulness.  It is why Jesus came, to rescue us from our faithlessness by living a life perfectly faithful to Father and becoming a sacrifice in our place so that His faithfulness becomes ours in the eyes of Father.
Let that resonate in your heart today… Our God is faithful and He will never cease to be faithful.  May that implore our hearts to faith-filled living in every nook and cranny of life.
