Deeper not Backwards

And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. Philippians 1:6

I am in the final stage of training for my Recovery Coach certification.  Last week while speaking to my supervisor he made a comment about the common human experience of being discouraged by slow personal progress.

How many times have you felt, like I have, that you have gone 3 steps forward and 2 steps back? Or 2 steps forward and 3 steps back?  I think we have all experienced the discouragement of feeling like we are losing ground.

In our conversation, Don[i] commented that rather than seeing it as slow progress perhaps the better way to see it is that God, rather than taking us backwards, is actually taking us deeper, to do a greater work of refining in our lives.  I had never thought of it that way, have you?

God is up to something good in our lives. It reminds me of this promise:

Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. He who calls you is faithful; he will surely do it. 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24
