Colors of God (Part 1)

Posted on April 1, 2020 by Catey Stover in Victory Call

The other day, I was at Sight & Sound in Branson and saw their production of Noah. One of my favorite parts about that story is when the Lord places His rainbow in the clouds, as a sign of His permanent promise to never flood the earth again.

“I am going to make a solemn promise to you and to everyone who will live after you. This includes the birds and the animals that came out of the boat. I promise every living creature that the earth and those living on it will never again be destroyed by a flood.

The rainbow that I have put in the sky will be my sign to you and to every living creature on earth. It will remind you that I will keep this promise forever. When I send clouds over the earth, and a rainbow appears in the sky, I will remember my promise to you and to all other living creatures. Never again will I let floodwaters destroy all life. When I see the rainbow in the sky, I will always remember the promise that I have made to every living creature. The rainbow will be the sign of that solemn promise.” – Genesis 9:9-17

Looking at the rainbow, I believe that each and every color brings glory to God in it’s own special and unique way. Some of these are obvious symbols of the Lord’s character, provisions, and love and can be found in Scripture… and some are simply personal to me.

For the sake of keeping these Victory Calls short and sweet, let’s take this morning to look at the first three colors of the Rainbow, and in the next Victory Call we can look at the second set of three.

Red – Red is the first color in the rainbow and reminds us of the blood the Lord Christ Jesus shed on the cross for us. Red reminds us of our sin, but it also reminds us of the One who saved us from our sin.

Orange – Orange is the color of FIRE, which is something the Bible definitely speaks a lot about. It was through the burning bush that the Lord spoke to Moses. It was through the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego being thrown into the fiery furnace that the Lord showed his faithfulness. But one of my favorite verses that mentions fire is 2 Thessalonians 1:7, “and give relief to you who are troubled, and to us as well. This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels.” Fire represents the power and majesty of the Lord!

Of course, fire also represents judgment. In His mercy and love, Jesus gave us fire as a warning to the world that this life will end, and we can either be thrown into the eternal fiery furnace (Revelation 20:10, Matthew 13:50, Matthew 18:8) or we can reside with God our Father in eternal paradise (Luke 23:43, Revelation 2:7, 2 Corinthians 12:4).

Yellow – Yellow is my favorite color – it’s just such a happy one and reminds me of Spring and new beginnings. It’s also, of course, the color of the sun. The sun reminds us to PRAISE THE LORD! The Bible says this in Psalm 113:3, From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised!” It also says in Psalm 148:3, “Praise Him, sun and moon; Praise Him, all stars of light!”

I love that God tells His story through even the colors that we find in the rainbow, and in the world around us. Next time I will go into the colors green, blue, and purple… but my challenge to you would be, how do these next three colors reveal the character of God to YOU? I would love to hear your responses!
