A Good Thing

I’m sitting in bed right now, feeling sick and wishing I was literally anywhere else but here right now. Definitely not how I expected my Sunday to play out. I’m sure we can all attest to feeling some sort of way about having unmet expectations. Whether you thought you’d be married right now, have that job, or that car, or a bunch of kids… everyone has an idea of what they thought their life would look like, and I’m sure for most of us, it’s vastly different than what we expected. For me, I never would have pictured myself a Christian, working in full-time ministry, still being single at almost 27, etc. I thought I’d be a school teacher, married with at least two kids by now. Do I mourn the life I thought I’d have? Eh, maybe. But do I praise God for the life He has given me, even though it looks NOTHING like what I thought I wanted? YES!
I think it’s ok for us to wrestle with feelings of disappointment because of unmet expectations. It helps us to trust Him more and let go of our expectations. God doesn’t work for us, on our timeline, or our agenda, and I’m so thankful for that. He knows wayyyyy better than we do. If He sent His son to die on the cross so that all who believe in Him can spend eternity with Him, I think it’s safe to say we can trust Him with our plans.
Psalm 84:11-12 says: “For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless. 12 Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in you.”
God’s idea of a “good thing” probably looks nothing like what WE think is a good thing. He will not withhold His grace, His mercy, His forgiveness, and His love for us. That doesn’t mean He won’t “withhold” a husband, wife, promotion, etc. from us. I challenge you to trust Him. The One who has secured your salvation also has your future in the palm of His hands.

Think About This: “Where does your security lie? Is God your refuge, your hiding place, your stronghold, your shepherd, your counselor, your friend, your redeemer, your saviour, your guide? If He is, you don’t need to search any further for security.” – Elisabeth Elliot
