Who’s Holding Who

“My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.” Psalm 63:8

I recall my response to the question, “How are you?” with, “Trying to hold things together”, as one of my answers. The idea that I have anything to do with holding anything together is delusional. I can try to manage my life, but it takes more then Gorilla glue to hold things together.

I was reminded of this concept recently, while swimming with my grandson in a rough ocean, I had the death grip on his hand. He asked me if we could switch hands, in my curiosity I asked why, he said “I can hold on to you better with my other hand”. I looked at him and said, “Trust me when I tell you, you’re not holding on to me, I’m holding on to you”.

There is a huge benefit in our relationship with God that we can trust Him because He holds all things together. The psalmist is specific enough to say, “Your right hand upholds me”. This realm of spiritual provision and protection is one we abide in. This should be a comfort knowing we do not have to hold things up. One of the descriptions of Jesus in Colossians 1 is “He existed before anything else, and He holds all creation together” (NLT).

There are storms and rough waters ahead, it’s vital to know that it’s not us holding on to Him, but it’s Him holding on to us. The basis of our relationship with Jesus must rest on the firm foundation of Christ, we build upon the promises of God, not on the shifting sand of our best thinking. When we understand this, we live in freedom and have a confidence in God’s sustaining love. Let’s not let this reality go in vain, let’s walk in boldness and faith to build on the Solid rock. So, “Who’s holding Who”? What is it that is holding you back from being all God has called you to be? Relinquish the job of holding on to God and rest in knowing He is holding on to you, Amen!
