Who ya Gonna Tell?

“Therefore those who were scattered went everywhere preaching the word.” Acts 8:4

I was recently thinking about a cruise ship that was returning to port filled with thousands of passengers preparing to disembark and head home. I thought about if each person was tagged and somehow tracked, what the dispersion would look like. Thousands of people all gathered in one place having experienced an eventful vacation and were now returning home to tell of all that took place.

Now picture the Church, Sunday morning, all gathered together to fellowship, learn and be encouraged. What does that dispersion look like?

In Acts chapter 8 we see the Church being persecuted because of a man named Saul. God was already using him to fulfill His purpose. The death of Steven and the arrest of others caused believers to scatter. This dispersion was used to spread the Gospel.

Just like excited travelers with great stories and pictures from a cruise, we as believers should be excited and eager to tell others of our experience. With the use of social media and other resources available to us, we can achieve the commission given to the Disciples by Jesus, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father” (John 14:12). The question is do we believe? It’s not that we will do better things than Jesus, but more, dispersion is meant to spread the Word.

The sad thing is our dispersions, much like a cruise ship, are subtle and expected – done in an orderly fashion much to our comfort and convenience. It seems that tension and persecution facilitate the spreading of God’s grace better than comfort. I once heard it said you’ll see a fellowship die off because of the freedom of hardship before you will see one stop thriving because of persecution.

Let’s not provoke God to cause persecution or wait for the rocks to cry out to send the message of salvation, be excited enough to go out into your neighborhoods, work place and any other outlets you have to tell people of the Good news of the Gospel. Amen!
