Who Do You Worship?

“Give unto the Lord the glory due unto His Name. Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.” Psalm 29:2

I heard a question recently that captured my attention: do you invent the god you want or do you worship the God Who is?

Here’s the god I want. I want him, if he is god and can handle all things, to do the following for me:

  • I never get sick
  • I always get what I want
  • I have no troubles
  • I have plenty of money
  • It never rains on my parade
  • I am capable of doing whatever I choose, athletically, intellectually, musically, etc.

Now there’s the god I want to worship! But he does not exist: never did, never will!

Here’s the God Who is:

  • Being human, He knows I will get sick. But while I may be less than the picture of health here, I am promised an eternal future of no more pain and suffering.
  • Knowing that many things that I want are not good for me, He promises to meet my needs.
  • Realizing that it is in times of difficulty that we grow into maturity, He allows things in my life to challenge me.
  • He tells us that the love of money is the root of all evil, and while there are many people around us who seem to “have it all”, we discover that they are not any more satisfied than the rest of us. Enough is never enough!
  • Common sense tells me that it has to rain sometime. While the farmer is praying for rain and the skier for snow, both in the same location, and the golfer is praying for sunshine and the traveler for clear weather, both in the same area, one wins and another loses. Which one can blame God?
  • No one, nowhere has the ability to do anything he/she chooses. That is unrealistic. I am who I am. That means, by definition, that my physical stature and my mental agility are placing limitations which are out of my control and unless I grow by at least a foot or gain about 100 pounds for sports or have about 50 points added to my IQ, there are certain things out of my reach. Even then, with whatever measure of skill, I must work hard at developing and perfecting those abilities.

I have also learned from the school of hard knocks what I didn’t fully comprehend from all of the sermons I’ve ever heard until I experienced it for myself, that we grow more in the hard times than when all is going well.

God really does know what He is doing and is doing it quite well.

Daily Quote:“The one essential condition of human existence is that man should always be able to bow down to something infinitely great. If men are deprived of the infinitely great, they will not go on living and die in despair. The Infinite and the Eternal are as essential for man as the little planet on which he stands.” Fyodor Dostoyevsky

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: Then He who sat on the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And He said to me, “Write, for these words are true and faithful.”  – Revelation 21:5
