We Just Can’t Get it Right

“And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good.” (Gen. 1:31)

God made perfect man and man had only one rule to obey but didn’t.

Man at his best doesn’t get it right! We are flawed to the core.

God initiated worship and man began to worship stones, carvings, animals, the skies, etc.

God created male and female and the blessing of intimacy and man degraded it into depravity.

God initiated marriage and family and man distorted it.

Man created weapons to survive and protect himself. Man turned them into instruments of destruction.

Man created drugs for health/medicinal purposes. Man uses them for vile activities.

Man created art. Man uses it for pornography and to induce base thinking.

“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” (Jer. 17:9)

Even the great Apostle Paul said, “For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin…For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do…O wretched man that I am…!” (Rom: 7:14, 19, 24a)

We all have a nature with which we were born. We take various psychological tests to determine if we are wired as Dominant, Influence, Steadiness or Compliance (DISC). Within each of those personalities there are strengths and weaknesses. When we are operating on all cylinders in any one of those, Satan knows exactly where to attack. And when under pressure our natural tendency is to fall back on the greatest weakness in that trait. So we lose again, even at our best.

As the choir director practicing with the choir just before the biggest concert of the year, I missed a deadline by about 90 seconds. There was a women’s barbershop group that was to practice at 6:30pm. The director came and attacked me. 60 seconds! I attacked her right back. Reaction! Bad! The worst came out.  There were guests who heard the conversation. Here’s the clincher, I was also the pastor of the church!!!!!

We used to sing, “I need Jesus, need Him in the sunshine hour, need Him when the storm clouds lower. Every day along life’s way, yes, I need Jesus.” I wonder why we don’t sing it anymore?

We also used to sing, “Take time to be holy.” In this age and culture we don’t have enough time for that. There are too many pressing issues.  When we do sing them, old hymns and/or any new contemporary songs, do we really mean what we sing or are they just nice thoughts and tunes?

Sin has consequences. I wish I could remember that each time I mess up…before I mess up. I need all the help I can get. “O wretched man that I am!” I need Jesus. I need to learn to take time to be holy. How about you?

Daily Quote: “We are too Christian to really enjoy sinning, and to fond of sinning to enjoy Christianity. Most of us know perfectly well what we ought to do; our trouble is that we do not want to do it.” -Peter Marshall

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance. Romans 8:25
