Warning Signs

Who can understand his errors? Cleanse me from secret faults. ~Psalm 19:12

Warning signs are those signals we get before a problem arises. With recent technology, our cars have enhanced their warning signals. We even have the dreaded low tire warning light that has paralyzed some by thinking they have a flat tire. Recently my wife and I were traveling in the car and a message came across “System malfunction, refer to owner’s manual”. Turns out the guy at the gas station forgot to tighten the gas cap.

God has equipped us with warning signs that can help us navigate through our walk with Jesus. Those promptings from the Holy Spirit cause us to experience a lack of peace and joy. But “Who can understand his errors?” asks the Psalmist.

Being able to understand is a matter of wanting and then seeking. A desire to reveal a potential stumbling block or pitfall. We can become disconnected and prevent ourselves from experiencing the peace and joy that comes from God. A “For His name sake” attitude will cause us to seek out what God desires.

The statement:

“More to be desired are they than gold,

Yea, than much fine gold;

Sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.

Moreover, by them Your servant is warned,

And in keeping them there is great reward.” Psalm 19:10,11

This is the outcome of the truth found in the previous verses.

“The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul;

The testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple;

The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart;

The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;

The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever;

The judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.”

This desire to want to see the warning signs comes from a love for God. Sometimes we make the mistake of trying to follow the rules and we get frustrated, we begin to ignore the warning signs because they become burdensome. First, we must recognize God for who He is and realize the grace and mercy He has shown us.

If you’re frustrated because of all the rules and regulations, seek first to fall in love with Jesus, only then will you have a desire to say:

“Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart

Be acceptable in Your sight,

O LORD, my strength and my Redeemer.”
