To Whom will you Liken Me?

“Have you never heard? Have you never understood? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of all the earth. He never grows weak or weary. No one can measure the depths of his understanding.” (Isaiah 40:28)

We struggle with understanding God and the truth because we take hold of our perspective as if it’s definitive, rather than the truth itself. C.S. Lewis wrote concerning his efforts to dismiss God, “My argument against God was that the universe seemed so cruel and unjust. But how had I gotten this idea of just and unjust? A man does not call a line crooked unless he has some idea of a straight line. What was I comparing this universe with when I called it unjust?” God is the definitive standard, by which we categorize everything. He, as the standard of goodness, is what Lewis was comparing the cruelty of man to to make his judgments about how mankind treats itself.

Isaiah describes God as, ‘One full of Glory’, whose Word stands forever, who will come with might, bringing just reward and recompense. He says God is like a Shepherd who tends His flock with gentleness and a firm hand. He paints a picture of God’s absolute authority, vast nature, creative mastery, and infinite wisdom. Isaiah then states one commanding question the Holy One Himself proposes, “To whom then will you liken God that I would be His equal?” A ‘selfish gene’… a single cell amoeba, time plus matter plus chance…? None of these processes the capacity of rational thought that would even make possible the magnificent design of all that exist; and they must borrow from the theistic idea of God to hold any resemblance of coherency. So to deny God, you must rely on the God given capacity of free will to willfully reject Him.

Isaiah gives the answer to all those who desire to know the Truth. He proclaims “Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one and calls forth each of them by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing” (Isaiah 40:26).

Your perspective only reveals that there is a greater question, ‘your perspective of what?’ Now take Isaiah’s advice and look up and beyond the perspectives of mankind too, “The Everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth (who) does not become weary or tired. His understanding is inscrutable. He gives strength to the weary, and to him who lacks might He increases power.

Though youths grow weary and tired, and vigorous young men stumble badly, Yet those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.” (Isaiah 40:28-31) You want to know truth and have hope, than look beyond your perspective to the Holiness of God and you will find rest in His Word that stands forever.
