To Him, About Him

“For You will light my lamp; The LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.” — Psalm 18:28

What do you reference the most? Is there a topic you’re known for or can be associated with? If you’re like me the answer will be “Yeah, myself.” We tend to be self-promoters or we become promoters of others. It seems there is a pattern to our conversation that is geared to give ourselves the advantage.

Here’s something that could change your life, talk “To Him and about Him.” The idea of “praying without ceasing” can be achieved when our thoughts and conversations are about God and to Him. What better way to be described than a person who references God the majority of the time, especially when it comes to the answers to life? Is there anything going on in your life right now that a prayer to or an attribute of God can’t apply?

I’m not saying we shouldn’t seek counsel but even the counsel we seek should referenced “To Him, about Him.” I remember early in my Christian walk being told to always seek Biblical counsel not just Christian counsel. The difference is Biblical counsel will be Bible-based and line up with the scriptures. Christian counsel can be advice from a Christian and what they think you should do. Unfortunately more and more Christians are getting their doctrinal foundations from text books and commentaries, which is useful for reference but not foundation.

We are even directed in our time of singing that our songs are “To Him, about Him.” There’s something about praise music that can change my gray skies to blue. When we begin to be about the things of the Lord, our lamps become lit and the darkness becomes light. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path,” should be the basis for our proclamations. I find that as I fix my thoughts about Jesus there are endless possibilities, as opposed to a self or others solution which is limited and often disappointing. The Apostle Paul opens his second letter to the Corinthian church by reminding them “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.

When our first instinct is to focus our thoughts “To Him, about Him” we are at an advantage and have taken the high road to success. May our thoughts and words always be “To Him, about Him,” Amen!

Daily Quote: “God’s Word must be so strongly fixed in our minds that it becomes the dominant influence in our thoughts, our attitudes, and our actions. One of the most effective ways of influencing our minds is through memorizing Scripture. David said, “I have hidden Your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You” (Ps. 119:11).” – Jerry Bridges

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: “God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good? – Numbers 23:19
