They say, “Ignorance is Bliss”

“For in much wisdom is much grief,
And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.” Ecclesiastes 1:18

I drink diet soda and use artificial sweetener, I’m often posed with the question, “Do you know what that stuff does to you?” My response is, “No, and I don’t wanna know”.

I think in our lives we have an internal barometer that determines how much information we can or want to know. I must admit after coming to the knowledge of the dangers of certain foods and behaviors I have made some significant changes. I also have a weight scale that informs me of unhealthy boundaries that I’m approaching. This knowledge increases my sorrows.

“Ignorance is Bliss” is a term that suggests you are better off not knowing something. I apply such things to items like hotdogs, I do not wanna know what’s in them because I like hotdogs. But when it comes to my relationship with God and others, I have desired to disintegrate anything that hinders this.

First and foremost is the knowledge of God and to learn His character. He has put a desire in my heart to please Him with my attitude and actions. If I ignore this my ignorance is no longer bliss, but misery. Once you have tasted and seen that the Lord is good, it is very unpleasant to stray from that. My experiences with being ignorant to God’s ways have led me to anxiety and depression. Of course, I can also feel miserable after overeating or indulging in unhealthy foods and beverages, but the physical discomfort is very different from spiritual discomfort.

“When I kept silent, my bones grew old

Through my groaning all the day long.

For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me;

My vitality was turned into the drought of summer. Selah

 I acknowledged my sin to You,

And my iniquity I have not hidden.

I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,”

And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.” Psalm 32:3-5

We all govern our own parameters when it comes to the knowledge of dangers and unhealthy activities. But until we make it a priority to seek the Lord and not forsake His ways, we will never be satisfied. Amen!
