The Way that Seems Right

My Way or God’s Way

Prov. 14:12 — “There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death.”

Am I living on another planet or is it reality that in today’s culture we idolize people who specialize in doing things, being things and looking like things which seem about as anti-Scriptural as possible?

Think of the movie stars, rock stars, professional athletes, etc. Their hair styles, the massive tattoos covering their bodies and their strange (and revealing) clothing would, in former days, have caused us to say they look like weirdos. Think of the co-habitation, the sexual exploitation, the divorce, the drugs and alcohol and the fact that they rejoice in these practices. They are free!

Audie Murphy said, Let each man hear his own music and live by it. The drums roll one way for one man, and another way for another. You have to listen for your own.”

Years ago, when modesty stilled was in vogue, Debbie Boone sang, “It can’t be wrong when it feels so right” from “You Light Up My Life.” If it feels good, do it!

But the theme-song of all of them is Frank Sinatra’s, “I Did It My Way”. I wonder if he’s still rejoicing and singing that song?

But for the Christian, we need to do it God’s way. We can find this in Romans 12:2: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.”

Many think “religion” is a crutch, the Bible is passé, rules and regulations are too binding, the law was made to be broken. They live as though there will be no future accountability for things done in their lives.

Standing for Christ and His Word in this culture is not for the feint of heart. Peter reminds us (I Pet. 4:12), “Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you.” James 1:2,3 says we should rejoice when we encountered resistance for our faith, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

If you are at all like me, you do not find this easy or enjoyable. But we know we are accountable. We want to hear, “Well done…”  Our theme is not, “I Did It My Way”; rather, “I Did It God’s Way”, the way that ends in life, not death.

Think About This: “One has to be courageous not to let oneself be carried along by the world’s march; one needs faith and will-power to go cross-current.” -Carlo Carretto, Letters from the Desert

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: I will extol You, my God, O King; and I will bless Your name forever and ever. Every day I will bless You, and I will praise Your name forever and ever. Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable. – Psalm 145:1-3
