The Original Formula

“Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.” – Genesis 1:31a (NKJV)

I wanna take a moment and thank Keswick regular, Dr. Charles Zimmerman, for making do my research on a subject that I have often wondered about. Boxed cake mixes have always vexed me as far as who would have thought this stuff up and why they thought it was a good idea. I always thought it an invention that happened after World War II, but that isn’t exactly correct. It started with an abundance of molasses back in 1930’s and a Pittsburgh company, P. Duff and Sons, found a way to dehydrate all the ingredients needed for a gingerbread cake. All ya had to do was add water. Technically it was really about using up a surplus of molasses and that hungry families just wanted a cake on the table. Eventually housewives would rebel and insist on adding their own farm fresh eggs and once they found frosting, cake was as it should be.

When we were created, God’s love for us was like the overabundance of molasses back in 1930’s. He took all the ingredients that He needed from the dirt of the earth, the side chamber of a ribcage, added His love and viola! There was Adam and Eve. We can call this the original formula for what the rest of us would have looked like. Living under the throne of God’s grace we were to be allowed pleasure, to live in fullness and to have a purpose.  That would have meant populate the earth without pain, eat freely of what ever tree (except for one) and take care of God’s creation with the understanding that we were to do this all according to God’s plan. BUT there was a slight rebellion that changed all that.

Now, the serpent was the shrewdest of all the wild animals the LORD God had made. One day he asked the woman, “Don’t you wanna add your own eggs? And how about frosting to go along with your cake? Doesn’t it seem like God has held back something from you to make this all taste better?” And just by the power of suggestion, Eve decides that this was a good idea and was convinced the cake would look more beautiful, it would be delicious, and it would give her wisdom. Now ya can’t leave out Adam because he was more than glad to have a slice of this rebellious delight so he got his share…the rest is history.

God could have ended it all right there and then, but what’s He gonna do with that overabundance of love? Enter salvation…Emmanuel…God with us. The one aspect of the Godhead that’s gonna find out what it’s like to be one of us, Jesus Christ. And His earthly ministry will teach us the way to get back into right relationship with Elohim and even one of His harshest disbelievers would tell us, “Dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all He has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind He will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship Him. Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:1-2)

Even in this simple message, the creation has continued on as if it has a better recipe and goes thinking that it has found pleasure by questionable behavior to the extreme, seeking a fullness but still running on empty and changes its purpose with each new desire to achieve something unattainable. Jesus Christ said this doesn’t have to be. “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10) No matter how much we screwed the original formula up, El Elyon, THE Most High God still wants to be among His creation.

When it comes to cake mixes I’m very happy that Betty (Crocker) and Duncan (Hines) had their own idea about cake because, unless it’s in a deer meat chili, molasses doesn’t really taste all that good to me and I do like me some frosting…butter crème whipped to perfection that is!! HOWEVER…when it comes to those things that are absolutely attributed to the almighty hand of a loving God I gotta do the best I can not to add or take away anything that would spoil the original formula. If I take things, in view of His mercies, as a measure of His grace poured out upon me then it doesn’t take a Pillsbury dough-boy to let me know that EVERYTHING Elohim is about is very good. Hope you see it that way this day. Amen?
