Stay in Your Lane

Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. — Galatians 6:4 NLT

I have a good friend that has a signature answer for unsolicited advice, “Stay in your lane”. Using the book of Galatians as a backdrop to this type of response can help us maneuver through the process of keeping the unity in the body of Christ.

There is nothing wrong with offering advice except when it’s not asked for or given at the wrong time. Pulling up to a truck that has lost its load is not the best time to inform the driver that he should have used more tie downs. Advice is a type of authority that should be given only when asked. Unless a person has given you the authorization to speak into their lives, it usually doesn’t resonate very well. In chapter 6 the Apostle Paul lays out a pattern to developing unity where there is chaos, Judaizers who were offering Paul’s fellowship the unsolicited advice of adding Old Testament customs and practices.

So, here’s his advice, bear and share “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” and “For each one shall bear his own load”. So, is it the first or the second command? Yes, it’s both, the first order of business is to offer assistance, you cannot help someone carry something unless they are willing to give a portion to you. The second is to allow someone to bear their own load, too many times I find myself interfering with a work God is trying to do in someone, “Stay in Your Lane” is a concept of being willing to wait and make sure you’re helping. “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart”, this verse suggests that it’s possible to grow weary while doing good, good intentions without permission will intrude and cause fatigue. A process of cooperation will allow us to not become weary but will serve as a bridge to ignite unity and healthy fellowship. So the next time you wanna come into someone else’s lane make sure you have the ok to cross over, Amen!
