Sometimes I Feel Like a Nut

Maybe it’s my age, but I am starting to appreciate the squirrels. Welcome to this new week of Freedom Fighters. We are so grateful that you are following our blogs Monday through Friday.

I have not been a fan of the squirrels at America’s Keswick. They have destroyed several of our bird feeders over the years and have eaten through several of our trash can lids.

Despite the expensive squirrel proof feeders we have purchased, they have managed to figure out how to get around the challenge and successfully get the food.

We love to go to Ocean Grove and stay at a special place opposite a little park right next to the Great Auditorium, where I have become friends with three squirrels.

They know our vehicle. As soon as they see our car, they run over to where we are staying, waiting for me to grab some peanuts and feed them.

If I go to sit on the bench in the park, they will come sit with me. One sits on the back of the bench. One sits next to me. And one is brave enough to climb on my lap and eat right out of the cup!!!

Last week they were working on the kitchen in the apartment where we stay. The electrician was needed to keep the outside door open, and my wife was having her quiet time in the living room.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw something move. Lo and behold, one of my little squirrel buddies climbed the stairs and went looking for us in the living room. He was sitting there looking at Jan as if to say, “Can you please feed me.”

I love Psalm 119. If you have never read it, it’s a great read. It is a journal of David’s writings and his love for the Word of God. Now please hear me – first of all, it is His love for the GOD of the Bible. If we are not careful, we can worship the Bible instead of worshiping the God of the Bible.

Listen to this section:

“Oh, how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day. You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for your testimonies are my meditation. I understand more than the ancients, because I have kept Your precepts. I have restrained my feet meet from every evil way, that I might keep Your Word. I have not departed from Your judgments, for You Yourself have taught me. How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! Through Your precepts, I get understanding; therefore, I hate every false way. Psalm 119:97-104

From earlier chapters in the Psalms, you discover that David looked forward to immersing himself in the Word of God. In fact, throughout the Psalms, he talks about meditating on the Word day and night. I get the sense that he was so in love with God, that He looked forwarded to being in the Word every day.

My squirrel friends love peanuts (well, one prefers pistachio nuts over peanuts J) and seem to look forward to me feeding them whenever I am around. It never seems to get old for them.

That made me ask myself this question:

Do I hunger and desire to be in God’s Word every day so that He can feed me?

I want to get to the place where I will do whatever it takes to spend time with Him each day. How about you?

In His grip,

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward [c]us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance. -2 Peter 3:8-9
