Someone to Watch Over Me

This song was composed by George and Ira Gershwin in 1926. People have loved it ever since.

There is truth in the message. We all need guidance, examples, mentors.

The Bible, written in a different age than ours, was acted out in a rural community full of sheep. There had to be millions of them. (I remember when Mary Esther and I were in New Zealand in the early 2000s and we saw far more sheep than people.) Sheep are cared for by shepherds, thus the Bible uses that analogy of Jesus as the good shepherd (John 10:11-18), the great shepherd (Hebrews 13:20), and the chief shepherd (I Peter 5:4). In other words, He cares for us when we are in His flock. A shepherd puts his own life on the line to protect us.

In this pandemic climate, we need a shepherd. No man, regardless of the depth of his training and experience, has definitive answers to a totally new strain of virus. But we certainly have a right to all available information presented honestly. And with all of the swirling controversy, hate and second guessing, who can we trust?

My answer would be, I can trust those who are putting their lives at risk watching over me. They are doing their best protecting themselves and protecting me. It may be necessary at times to use harsh methods, but it is for my good. When it begins to be evident that I am not the focus of their concern, rather, their own advancement is the focus, I begin to question and resist. They are not really watching over me, they are advancing themselves at my expense.

Jesus gave His life for me. What more could He do? He has promised to always be with us, notice, not to exempt us, but be with us. If you have not had experience with Him in the past, there certainly is a reason why you would be hesitant now. Wouldn’t this be a good time to begin to trust? Let’s face it, to who else can you turn? Do you really want to put your final trust in fallible man or in a perfect, omniscient God?

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: 12 Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; 13 but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. -1 Peter 4:12-13
