Sifted by Truth

“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” — John 8:32

I often marvel at the inability to know truth. There seems to be more of a desire to allow falsehoods to stick out and become easy to believe than there is to just know the Truth. I’ve been guilty of believing a lie and allowing it to shape my thoughts more so than I am to accept what is true and be conformed by it.

It reminds me of the old style frying pans, without a layer of grease the item you’re cooking will stick to it, the hotter the heat, the harder it is to remove. On the other hand if we are coated with Teflon the falsehoods will fall away.

This can be the case when it comes to who we are, if we believe the lie that we who the enemy tells us we are, the negative things will stick like glue. The same can be true of us when we think too highly of ourselves. Thank God that He is willing to allow us to be “Sifted by Truth.”

This idea of sifting is to be shaken up until the falsehoods that shape us fall to the ground. In John chapter 8 Jesus is confronting the Pharisees of the truth of who He is. When sifted by truth the Pharisees chose to let their pride create a surface without grease. They allow the falsehoods of their identity to shape their beliefs. A major turning point in our lives is when we are faced with the truths of God’s word on a daily basis, whether we choose to accept it and allow it to stick. There’s a path we all must take, Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Abiding in His word is key to allowing truth to have its way in our daily walk. A good barometer of where we are in accordance to living in the truth is whether or not we’re free. “The Truth will set you free” is a lifestyle of not reacting to the falsehoods of life. When we walk in truth the things that keep us in bondage fall away as if we’re protected with Teflon. Allowing criticisms, inadequacies, misinterpretation to mold our thinking are all ways of being in bondage.

Allow God’s word to sift all the falsehoods out, let the truth of scripture set you free. Truth has a name, His name is Jesus, Amen!
