Shine Your Light

Spot light beam. Flashlight

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.” (Isaiah 60:1)

I work the night shift at the Colony of Mercy, so  it is always dark when I walk home. While walking, I notice there are different noises, various animals, and many other things that cover the ground, so I shine a little light to cut through the darkness and make a pathway. In addition, it lets whatever is out there see who I am. One day, I heard a hissing sound and when I shined the light, it was a mother goose trying to protect her goslings. Light is very useful in the dark.
Isaiah was dealing with a different type of darkness. The Israelites revealed the darkness of their hearts by turning away from their God. God had miraculously delivered the Israelites throughout their entire existence and they still did what was right in their own eyes. They devoted themselves to false idols, they were consistently concerned with their own pleasure, and they invited a heathenous culture to darken their perceptions. Isaiah declares, “Arise, shine, for your light has come!”
“But the path of the righteous is like the light of dawn, that shines brighter and brighter until the full day.” (Proverb 4:18)
Jesus became the light in of the world during his earthly ministry, now he has passed the light to us shine. Sometimes we get caught in the politics or the theology of life and forget to shine our lights in to a darken generation. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light”(Ephesians 5:8). We were delivered for so much more then just lofty enlightenments; we are to shine this light to expose darkness, navigate thorough a dark world, and moreover let dark hearts see the light of Jesus. Shine Your lights!
