God is our refuge and strength; and every present help in time of trouble. Psalm 46:1

So where were you on September 11, 2001? My guess is that most of you reading this can recall this horrific day as if it were yesterday.

It started out as a normal day. But we watched the news unfold as the twin towers were attacked, then the Pentagon, then the crash of Flight 93 in Shanksville, PA.

Little did we know how personal this day would be for our ministry. Board member Don Peterson and his wife Jean, arrived at Newark Airport early that day. Because they were early, they were bumped to Flight 93. And the rest is history.

Several weeks later, we heard a news report that when the rescue workers arrived on the scene in Shanksville, the only two visible things seen were a tire and a Bible.

Selfishly we hoped it was Don’s Bible. And guess what? It was. The picture of the Bible is now on display at the Flight 93 Memorial. The picture is not just the Bible, but it also shows the flyleaf of the Bible, where Don wrote his name. Tucked inside his Bible was the list of the Colony of Mercy residents who he would be praying for on his trip.

Don Peterson loved the Lord, his family, and the ministry of America’s Keswick. The evil men who planned and orchestrated this tragic event thought they were the winners. Little did they know that Don’s testimony would continue to be shared years later, giving God the glory for a life well-lived.

Paul penned these words: But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. (Acts 20:24)

Don finished well. May that be the desire of all our hearts to finish our race with joy.
