“Rules Were Made To Be Broken”

Remember that quote from a long time ago? Children love to push the limits; curfew at 8, so they come home at 8:15. They play hooky from school only to find out that the principal called to find out where they were that day. Drinking from their parent’s liquor cabinet at the age of 17(legal drinking age was 18 when I grew up). And then of course, it carries on to their adult years. Call out sick to work to play a round of golf or go to the beach because it was the perfect beach day. Testing the speed limits on the Garden State Parkway. Yes, cars can do over 100 miles per hour. Even today, driving my 1.3 miles to work I can break the law upwards of 11 times; 4 stop signs that I could roll threw without coming to a full stop or using my signal direction. Going over the speed limit in the 25-, 35- and 50-mile per hour zones that are posted.

“Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgement on themselves.” (Romans 13:1)

The Colony of Mercy has many rules, of which I feel are necessary, to help the men better themselves in there walk with Christ. But there’s always one or more that push the limits on the rules. After several chats, I pulled together everyone in the kitchen to inform that the rules here at Keswick, and out in the real world, aren’t made to be broken. The rules are there to keep us from being broken. To many of us, including myself, we have forgot about the rules of the land and the rules of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. When we start going back to our sinful nature, we are blinded to the laws that God have given to us and fall deeper into sin.

“Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that your work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you.” (Hebrews 13:17)

This week we lost another Grad of The Colony to addiction. Will and I talked so often while we worked together. He really wanted to grasp what God had in store for him this time around. I cried and then I got angry. WHY!!! I have no answers and don’t want to know how. But I pray that all of us will follow the rules and not become broken!

Think About This: “Look for yourself, and you will find in the long run only hatred, loneliness, despair, rage, ruin, and decay. But look for Christ and you will find Him and with Him everything else thrown in.” – C.S. Lewis
