Rediscovering The Law Of God

Posted on January 5, 2022 by Catey Stover in Freedom Fighters

“We are Jews by birth and not “Gentile sinners,” and yet because we know that a person is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we ourselves have believed in Christ Jesus. This was so that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law, because by the works of the law no human being will be justified.”

Galatians 2:15-16 (CSB)

I thought this would be an easy read during the Thanksgiving break but it turned into anything but an easy read. I got a copy of a book titled “Pathway To Freedom: How God’s Law Guides Our Lives” by Alistair Begg and just a few pages in I realized I’m in real deep. I knew I was in trouble when Begg raised this sarcastic question, “After all, who would want to return to the enslavement of biblical ethics?” Wha?

Now mind you, he’s asking this in the context that many Christians are pretty much settled on the notion that Jesus was fulfilling the Law and the Prophets. So, since He boiled everything down to just two commandments, we got us enough rules to live by. And even in this we excuse ourselves from the second because, well let’s face it, some of you Christians are flat out hard to love, but as for the rest of us, we’ll try to as we’re commanded. Anyway…

The real bite down for me comes in his prologue. He’s going over the threefold use of the Law and as he covers the very first one under the heading of “The Civil or Political Function of the law”, he’ll say something that definitely starts protesting and rioting in the public square. To quote, “When the Supreme Court of the United States rendered its watershed decision in Roe v. Wade, it had overstepped its legitimate authority. It possesses no right to enact laws on the basis of social utility divorced from absolute divine norms. If it had rendered a decision on the basis of Gods moral law, then the court would have been forced to recognize that the sixth commandment, which forbids murder, takes precedence over any rights a woman may have in the matters of sexual freedom and the jurisdiction of her body.”

WOW!! For all of ya’ll who may be saying “separation of church and state” needs to be applied, ya may wanna Google that, I’m not gonna go into it. What I am gonna go into is the “social utility divorced from absolute divine norms” part. It sure does seem like everyday society wants no part of a “Thou Shall Not” intruding upon its behavior and thought process. It’s a more “Do What Thou Will” and worry about the consequences later. Unfortunately, the bill comes due, always, and we’re not really equipped to pay the debt because we’re not a “thinking eternally” group of people anymore.

So, where am I going with this today? Glad you asked, if were doing our Matthew 28 best to get the Gospel Good News out to everyone we’ll need to remind folks that God did set the moral compass a long time ago and it might do us some good to share this verse…

“Indeed, we have all received grace upon grace from His fullness, for the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” John 1:16-17

Whether folks are willing to give a bent ear or not, the truth of the matter is God’s Law points out the areas in our lives where eternal consequences are real BUT praise God for the salvation that can be found in Jesus Christ. The truth He brings and the grace He provides is sufficient enough for society to take a glance at the mirror and see the true ugly that is there, repent of it and turn away before it all goes to Hell.

As easy as that was to type, the bottom line in it is that it’s just wishful thinking, isn’t it? The Book and its ending have already been written, so why bother. “After all, who would want to return to the enslavement of biblical ethics?” Well, we should at the very least. We are to be the salt and light and if we say we have the love of Jesus in our hearts then you do your Matthew 28 best to get it there.

If 2022 is to start looking any better then it has to start with our own reflections, and if the world doesn’t want it, fine, dust off your feet and go elsewhere…but don’t quit now, there’s Jesus to consider. Amen?

Think About This: “Do not fear, you Christians. The Spirit of God has not lost His power. In His own good time, He will send His messengers even to a wicked and adulterous and careless generation. He will cause Mount Sinai to overhang and shoot forth flames; He will convict men of sin; He will break down men’s pride; He will melt their stony hearts. Then He will lead them to the Saviour of their souls” – J. Gresham Machen
