Really???

If it wasn’t so sad and painful, it would be pretty funny. But right now, I am hurting and thinking that I might be a candidate for stock in bubble wrap.

We have been redoing the front entrance to the Raws Memorial building and it looks awesome. Our crew did a remarkable job.

They were finishing off the last section of the walkway but there was still about 3ft of uncovered boardwalk left. They did their due diligence and put cones to block off that unfinished section.

We were in the midst of preparing for serving 900 ladies for our Spring Ladies Day and our speaker’s husband was leaving the building. I needed to get information to him so I rushed out the door to catch him.

For 21 years when I have left the Raws Memorial I have always walked to the right. So that’s what I instinctively did and as you have already guessed, I went right through the hole in between the support beams.

Thankfully, the Lord protected me. My leg is badly bruised and I had one big brush burn. The good news is that another inch and I could have been a boy soprano or a Eunuch. But do I ever feel stupid.

And my staff and guests have been such wonderful encouragers. So many have said, “At least it was you and not a guest.” 😊

There are so many lessons that I learn from my stupidity that are important for us to learn in the Christian life. Here are just a couple:

1. My dear Pastor/Mentor/Friend, Pastor Newton Conant used to talk about temptation and sin in the life of a believer. He would often tell us “You can’t straddle a picket fence and expect to not get hurt.” If that isn’t good, practical and sound advice. When was the last time you heart a message on that topic? But what a great reminder.
2. We need to fix our eyes on Jesus. In the Gospels we remember the account when Peter walked on water. He was bold, impetuous, and crazy – in the midst of the storm he jumps out of the boat and attempts to walk on water to get to Jesus. After all if Jesus can do it – I can. Well Peter was certainly not thinking about the fact that he wasn’t Jesus. My friend Dr. B used to say “some people write their own press releases – and some people actually read their own press releases.”

   The moment that Peter took His eyes off Jesus, he started to sink and almost drown. Too many of us have done the same thing. We get cocky, full of ourselves and actually believe we are invincible.

   The writer of the book of Hebrews summed it up this way: Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us,and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,  looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:1-2)
   One translation says “fixing our eyes on Jesus …” He started the race for His kids, and He stands at the finish line cheering us on! We must fix our eyes on Jesus.

 

3. But the other side of the coin is that we need to think about where and how we are walking. Our steps are important. Proverbs is filled with verses that talk about our walk and watching where we walk to be aware of the path we are on.

 

I did break my leg a number of years ago in Bermuda and ever since then, with each passing year, I have been more aware of stairs and  curbs. I really don’t want to break any more bones, and at age 63 soon to be 64, I don’t want to be a candidate for the “I-have-fallen-and-I-can’t-get-up” commercials.
