Stick to the Script

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33

One of the chief objectives in a Christian’s life is to understand that God has a plan and we are to do the best we can to follow the script. As with any plot there are usually many subplots, those situations that play into the original script.

There are many subplots in our daily walk with the Lord, most of the people God puts in our life are there for a reason. There are many people, places and things and each one has a role to be played out. The challenge is to “Stick to the Script.”

Like any play of movie scene it’s very important to stay in context, there are many things in our life that don’t belong being played out. When we decide to go off script we are essentially outside of God’s perfect will. Truth of the matter is, we probably spend more time in God’s permissible will than His perfect will.

Those are times where God will allow us to walk in a wrong direction with the hopes of us seeing the waste of time and effort we will put into our own plan. “There are many plans in a man’s heart, nevertheless the LORD’s counsel—that will stand” Proverbs 19:21. We have the gift of conviction that will goad us back to the script.

I often find myself playing out a part that has nothing to do with spiritual things. In Matthew 6:33, about two thirds through the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus explains how to “Stick to the Script”, “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you”. Basically the plot is the Kingdom of God, all the subplots are those things pertaining to eternal things that give glory to God.

The best way for me to determine if what I’m involving myself in is in is to determine the difference between temporal and eternal. Although we need a lot of material things in this world most of them are not in the plan. Wasting my time on things that won’t be around in eternity is futile.

Jesus ends the Sermon with a powerful illustration, “Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock”, compared to, “But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand”.

So, my advice would be to “Stick to the Script”, it’s a beautiful story with a great ending, Amen!
