Peace Multiplied

“Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.” 2nd Peter 1:2

My wish list has become more relevant to reality as I grow in age. In the past when asked the question “if you could have anything you wanted, what would it be?” The material objects would flood my mind.

Today my ultimate prize is peace, that place of knowing that everything is okay. The change came when I realized my list of desires that I thought would bring happiness always accompanied a level of stress and anxiety because of the added responsibility. The new house, the fancy car, a boat and even money. All these things that at face value seem to bring satisfaction only suffice until the thrill wears off and you’re left with the responsibility and worry of the maintenance.

Peter starts off his second letter by wishing his readers that “Peace be Multiplied.” More than an idealism, but a blessing, to be at peace in abundance. The pronouncement of this blessing of peace is emphasized by adding the word ‘multiplied.’ This equation of multiplying requires more than one expression. How do you multiply peace?

The only two things that I can think of that would be used to multiply peace is the presence of the Holy Spirit times (x) the knowledge of God. The knowing that God exists and the work of the Spirit to give us the understanding of the divine nature that is ours in Christ Jesus. “As His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue.” When we can stay in that truth, there is a sense of calmness and security no matter what life’s circumstances throw at us.

Too many times the multiplying of unrest has been experienced through the equation of uncertainty times (x) fear which equals anxiety. Too many times have I allowed myself to think that material things will bring satisfaction. Our willingness for a quick fix to somehow bring relief is a futile attempt that only returns us wanting and empty.

Multiply the things that are of God with power of the the Holy Spirit, put away falsehoods that only leave us empty. The dry and arid places have failed us in the past and will continue to wear us down. Seek those things which come from above, multiply that with grace and mercy we received from God. May you have “Peace Multiplied” as you walk with the King.

Think About This: An unpeaceful mind cannot operate normally. Hence the Apostle teaches us to “have no anxiety about anything” (Phil. 4:6). Deliver all anxious thoughts to God as soon as they arise. Let the peace of God maintain your heart and mind (v. 7). – Watchman Nee
