Off the Rails

I enjoy a nice train ride from time to time, just the comfort of relaxing while someone else does the driving and patiently await my destination. I prefer an express without all the stops but as long as the train stays on the tracks, I’m happy to just get there safely.

The most critical part of the train ride is keeping the train on the tracks. Sometimes life is like a train, we have a destination that sometimes includes stops. I think about these stops as our journey in life. If you’re a believer in Jesus Christ your destination has been set, the goal now is to make the necessary stops and to keep from going “Off the Rails”. The end of Chapter 12 in Romans is a guide to keep us on track as we travel. We may pick up many passengers on our train as we make the stops on our journey. The key is to make the right stops and to treat our passengers with love.

Each one of us has a different set of tracks. If we allow the twists and curves of life to jump the tracks and go off the rail, we become stuck and our ability to minister is diminished. Some of us can’t make as many stops as others but it’s not the quantity of stops, but rather the quality of the stop. The ability to be of one mind or to be in harmony with your passengers is key to having a successful trip. Attributes like genuineness, giving, having compassion, and hospitality are ingredients to a fruitful journey.

If we view our stops as interruptions to our daily routine, we forfeit the gift of fellowship. A sure way to go “off the rails” is to have a head of steam and full speed ahead, ignoring signs to slow down and make every opportunity of the Trek.

So, before you run out the door, allow God to redirect your schedule. Don’t miss those stops that provide a way to minister and be ministered to. Amen!
