Memorize God’s Word – Hide God’s Word in Your Heart

Posted on January 10, 2022 by Catey Stover in Freedom Fighters

It’s amazing how many things we can memorize, from songs to movie clips to sports trivia. One of the movies that so many of my generation watched years ago was Young Frankenstein. It is so funny that when you mention that movie title, how many people can quote line after line from that movie.

When it comes to memorizing Scripture, we seem to come up with all sorts of excuses as to why we can’t do it.

Last week I shared ten benefits of memorizing God’s Word with you from an article written by Pastor Paul E. Chapman.

I want to give you ten more this morning from that article:

  1. Memorizing Scripture helps you overcome the evil one. (1 John 2:14)

Remember when Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness? How did He come back at Satan? He used the Scriptures – “It is written …”

When we face temptation, we can respond to the enemy of our souls by quoting Scripture back to him. I believe that is one of the ways we can resist the devil. We may not always have our physical “sword” with us, but if we have committed the Word to our memory – we will always have the Word of God in our hearts at our disposal.

  1. Memorizing Scripture conquers confusion. (1 Corinthians 14:33)
  2. Memorizing Scripture nourishes growth. (1 Peter 2:2)
  3. Memorizing Scripture benefits last forever. (1 Peter 1:23-25)
  4. Memorizing Scripture builds us. (Acts 20:32)
  5. Memorizing Scripture insures God’s blessing. (Revelation 1:3)
  6. Memorizing Scripture produces prosperity. (Psalm 1:2-3)

Don’t flip out – I am not suggesting wealth and prosperity gospel here. See Joshua 1:7-9

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

  1. Memorizing Scripture cleanses us. (Psalm 119:9)
  2. Memorizing Scripture convicts us to reject sin. (Psalm 119:11)

The more Scripture we memorize, the more in tune we will be in tune with the Holy Spirit. I can’t tell you how often I am more discerning of His voice of conviction as He brings back to my mind verses that I have memorized.

  1. Memorizing Scripture creates peace and emotional stability.
    (Psalm 119:165)

This is especially true at night. I find that so often when I can’t sleep – if I quote Scripture that I have memorized, God’s Word will quiet and settle me.

The older I get, the more anxious I seem to get in certain situations. These are the moments that I am starting to quote Scripture to myself.

So bottom line … why not start this year by memorizing one verse of Scripture each week. If you need suggestions, you can visit our website for a list of verses our staff is memorizing each week.
