Keep your eye on the prize!

I love golf, it gets me out in the fresh air with a few like-minded friends. We laugh at each other, OFTEN, and try not to take ourselves too seriously. I’m not great at the game, but I would love to get better. And last year, I was able to play more rounds of golf than the past 4 years combined. So, we will see what this year brings. There are so many things that need to go correctly for the ball to go where you want it to go: grip, stance, swing, alignment, posture, and a thousand other things. Golf can be one of the most enjoyable and frustrating things, and that’s only on the first hole!! One thing we are always told to do is to keep your eye on the ball until you follow through with your swing. Looking up tends to bring your whole body with it and affects the contact of the ball. Two younger men at Keswick, that I’ve had the pleasure to play rounds of golf with this past year, are just learning. But when they keep their eye on the ball, they can out drive me by 100 yards, but it may not always happen.

When we keep our eyes on something else, which doesn’t always happen, it can get us into trouble!

Hebrews 12:2 “Keeping our eyes on Jesus, the source and perfecter of our faith. For the joy that lay down before him.”

When we choose to follow Jesus and surrender our lives to Him, how often do we lose our focus, take our eyes off the prize, and forget what he has in store for us. Many of us, myself included, have at one time or more, taken our eyes off the One who brought us out of the muck and mire. Life will always throw us a ball in the water or in the weeds so tall that we may never find it. But keep looking, searching for him every day and you will find Him again.

Matthew 13:15 “For the people’s heart has grown callous, their ears are hard of hearing and they have shut their eyes, otherwise they might see with their eyes and hear with ears and understand with their hearts and turn back and I would heal them.”

Golf is just a game; I’m almost guaranteed to lose a ball every round. What I don’t want to lose is the prize of knowing my Lord and Savior and what He has planned for me. Keep your eyes on what matters most! JESUS
