I’ve had a few

My dad, rest his soul, LOVED Frank Sinatra! He lived and worked in Jersey City for over 50 years, right next door to Hoboken, and witnessed Sinatra’s rise to fame. When one of his songs came on the radio, you knew to put your ear plugs in because he would crank up the volume. When Sinatra performed his concert at Madison Square Garden in the early 70s, I remember my dad sitting in a beach chair outside the house listening to it. One song that always reminds me of my dad and his love for Sinatra is “I Did My Way.” A line in the song goes: “Regrets, I’ve had a few, but then again too few to mention.” Most of us have had regrets in our lives. Some of us have had more than a few and way too many to mention. Hopefully we have learned life lessons from them and can pass them along to future generations avoiding making the same mistakes we did. No one is perfect and somewhere along the line we have regrets.

When I say “we all have regrets” I mean no one, not even God! Yes, the almighty God who created the Heavens and the Earth had a regret, Genesis 6:6 “The Lord regretted that He made man on the earth, and He was deeply grieved.”  The world that God created and the millions of people had become so evil that He decided it was time to wipe the slate clean and start all over again. Noah and his family found favor with the Lord and were charged with this.

But, as we read past Genesis, we see how WE, Gods people, return to our old ways time-in and time-out. How many times in Judges is it mentioned after a period of worshiping the Lord, they turned back and “everyone did whatever seemed right to him.” I’ve wondered lately, is God looking down on this sinful world and thinking of Genesis 6:6? Is he looking for the next Noah?

Yes, I have many regrets in my life, as so many of us do. Am I looking forward to Christ coming back? YES. Would I like more time to see my grandchildren grow? YES. But if it is God’s Will that He thinks it time to have a do-over, as in Genesis 6:6, then I will have no regrets; just praise for the One who gave me life.
