Getting Mad at God

Job 2: 9 (Job’s wife) said to him, “Are you still maintaining your integrity? Curse God and die!”  

I’ll never forget the first time I ever heard about people getting mad at God. I had to be in my 50s! I’d been in church and conference situations for decades. I remember thinking, who would dare get mad at God?

Since then I have heard of and know dozens, if not hundreds, of people who have turned their backs on Him and want nothing to do with Him. (My life circumstances changed so that I have much more contact with people outside my own little sub-cultural group.)

I ask why? I think there are four main reasons:

1. They reason that a good God couldn’t allow such bad things to happen. But the Bible does teach that “…He makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.” (Matt 5:45) When a hurricane or flood or forest fire or drought or famine goes through, it takes everything and everyone in its wake and doesn’t snake thorough and leave the property or persons of Christians untouched.

2. Because of preaching or conversations with over-zealous Christians they felt they were promised something and God didn’t deliver. It may have been healing for oneself or friend/relative, it may have been finances (prosperity gospel), it may have been family disunity, or many other causes.

3. People refuse to believe that you reap what you sow. If you make a series of wrong choices and suffer the consequences, don’t blame it on God! You had a free will to make those choices. People ask, “how could a good God allow that to happen?” The simple answer is that the issue came to its logical conclusion!!!

4. When people “accepted Christ” they were looking for something other than what He offers. People were following Jesus because of the miracles they saw Him perform and He told them His purpose was to provide “living bread” so that they would hunger no more. He said they had to eat his body and drink his blood (understood as completely relying on Him for spiritual healing) and they rejected His “hard teaching”. “From that time many of his disciples went back and walked no more with him.” (John 6:66).

There is a hesitancy on my part to ask you to be like Job, who said, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him. Even so, I will defend my own ways before Him” (Job 13:15). Today I’m supposed to have the patience of Job, tomorrow the faith of Abraham, the next day the meekness of Moses, the following day the courage of Elijah, etc. But I’m me! So I’m asking you today to know your Bible and to seek the leading of the Holy Spirit in your life one day at a time. And be ready, like Job, to defend your ways before God. That you can do!
