Fill’er Up

“To know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; That you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” — Ephesians 3:19

To be filled to the fullness of God, there’s no place I’d rather be. I’m not sure if I completely comprehend what that even is. To be filled can also mean to be complete or fully stocked. I love to travel with my wife, I’m not sure when all the preparation takes place but when we hit the road there isn’t anything we don’t have. Whether it’s a road trip or a day at the beach, there’s snacks, drinks, napkins, and even antacids. If I have any discomfort, an Advil is readily available. When I travel alone, I’m usually in a “want” or “wish I had” situation.

In the epistle to the Ephesians, Paul seems to be expressing the ability to be filled with the Spirit of God, to be prepared in order to conduct ourselves as representatives of the Kingdom. He begins chapter 4 with, “I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called.” To walk worthy is to be fully equipped with the understanding of the love of Christ that is available to every believer.

When we venture off into the world half empty or running on fumes, we will be in poor condition and will have forfeited the opportunity to represent Jesus in the manner that is profitable for the Kingdom and brings glory to God. When I’m not properly portraying the fruit of the Spirit, I’m relying on my own understanding, when it comes to making decisions or actions that present themselves during my day, I come up short. When I become hungry, instead of being nourished by the word of God that is present when I’m filled with the Spirit of God I tend to rely on worldly wisdom instead of hearing from God.

Think of some of the decisions we make when we’re not spiritually minded. I have done things that in hind sight become head-scratchers, knowing it is in direct contrast to what godly decision making is. To be “filled with all the fullness of God” is evident when we conduct ourselves “with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” It’s the absence of pride, harshness and selfishness, it’s when we have the patience to see things through the eyes of Christ, looking for common unity and “The bond of Peace.”

So, today before you leave the house, “Put on Christ”, make no provision for the flesh, be ready in season and out. Let’s know the love of Christ that passes all knowledge. Amen!

Think About This: “Those years, months, weeks, days, and hours, that are not filled up with God, with Christ, with grace, and with duty, will certainly be filled up with vanity and folly. The neglect of one day, of one duty, of one hour, would undo us, if we had not an Advocate with the Father.” – Thomas Brooks

This Week’s Verse to Memorize:

You are my hiding place and my shield; I hope in Your word. Psalm 119:114
