Drama

“Whoever guards his mouth and tongue keeps his soul from troubles.” — Proverbs 21:23

Overreacting and exaggerating are the two ingredients to cause drama. That unnecessary reaction to a situation that causes the soul trouble. How many times do we create unrest only to look back and realize it really wasn’t that big of a deal?

I find that there’s not a more draining emotion then enacting drama into our life and allowing our mind to run rampant and overreact to a situation. I can easily become overwhelmed and limit my decision making when I allow myself to make a mountain out of a mole hill.

I can easily detect when a person is over reacting, you’ll hear words like, “everyone, always, constantly, everywhere and never” to name a few. There is also a sense of urgency applied to almost every situation. The, “the sky is falling” mentality can be detrimental to our faith. The dramatic expressions we use in our verbiage can cause us to overreact.

I’m not sure if it stems from anxiety or the act of gaining attention but either way it’s not of God and can only cause tension. I find when I’m around dramatic people it can cause a false sense of stability and leave me in a type of panic mode. If we are prone to overreact we can also lose credibility because when the dust settles we realize it wasn’t as bad as originally portrayed.

The benefit of being a believer in Jesus Christ is that nothing takes Him by surprise. When we realize that not only does God know about it but He also allowed it. I picture the order of the day passing by the desk of God and having Him say either yes, I will allow this or no, I will not allow this. Our filter that we see an obstacle through needs to be through the lens of scripture.

The “Count it all joy” concept in the book of James is used to build character in us. Adding drama to a situation can only diminish the lesson that’s to be learned. In a world full of drama the stamp of the Christian should be full assurance in our God. When we exhibit a calmness with a quiet confidence in our God we bring peace and security to each situation.

So the next time something comes your way your first action isn’t directed by a scene from a movie but instead with a quiet heart bowed in prayer asking God how He wants us to respond, Amen!

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: Who is wise? Let him understand these things. Who is prudent? Let him know them. For the ways of the Lord are right; the righteous walk in them, but transgressors stumble in them. – Hosea 14:9
