Don’t Forget the Holy Spirit

But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me. And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning. John 15:26-27

Growing up, my Pastor would often make this statement: “If you love God, you will come to church on Sunday morning. If you love Jesus, you will come to church on Sunday night. If you love the Holy Spirit, you will come to prayer meeting on Wednesday night.”

Bad theology, huh? I know that he was trying to motivate us to realize the importance of being together as the family of God.

Other places that I have been have either placed too much emphasis on the Holy Spirit or they have gone the to the opposite extreme where nothing is ever mentioned about the Holy Spirit.

I know of a church who would sing the praise chorus, “Father, we love You, we worship and adore You, Glorify Your name in all the earth.” They would sing the next stanza, “Jesus, we love You,” but they would never sing the third stanza, “Spirit, we love You …”

The Holy Spirit is the third member of the Godhead and has a significant ministry in the life of a believer.

Jesus shared with His disciples that the Holy Spirit would come after He departed and that He would be the One who would give guidance in our lives, both the big and the small ones.

If you have trusted Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, the Holy Spirit dwells inside of you and will speak to you from the Word as your Counselor and guide.

Author/speaker, Dr. Steve Aterburn in his devotional, Every Day For Every Man, reminds us of the role of the Holy Spirit in our lives:

  1. Changes our hearts: I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Ezekiel 36:26
  2. Remind us of what God has asked us to do: But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26
  3. Guide us into the truth and teach us: However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. John 16:13
  4. Give us the power to share our faith: But you shall receive powerwhen the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall bewitnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth. Acts 1:8
  5. Remind us that we are God’s children: The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, Romans 8:16
  6. Help us in our distress and pray for us: Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26
  7. Give us spiritual gifts to use for God: But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills. 1 Corinthians 12:11
  8. Lead us to victory over the cravings of our sinful nature: I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. Galatians 5:16

My bottom line challenge for you today is this: Don’t forget the Holy Spirit. He wants to do significant work in and through you. Embrace Him. Love Him and study about Him.

Think About This: Because the Holy Spirit is God, we feel Him as He controls our circumstances and transforms our lives. When He does that, He uses us. He melts us in relationships. He molds us in the pursuit and the direction of His will. He fills us with power and the perseverance to keep at it. He uses as He controls our circumstances and transforms our lives. Ask the Spirit of God to use you, just as you are, with the gifts and abilities that He’s given you. Secure in the confidence that God is in control of your life, you will be free to serve Him with joy and effectiveness. — Charles Swindoll

This Week’s Verse to Memorize: And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” – Revelation 21:4
