Blueprints

“Through wisdom a house is built, And by understanding it is established.” Proverbs 24:3

A lot of planning goes into building a house. I have seen brilliant layouts and not so brilliant layouts. Some people have a vision of both practicality and design. Others just want a certain number of bedrooms, bathrooms, and living space.

There can be a comparison between building a house and building our character. To appreciate a house’s layout is to start with the direction the house faces. Some love a kitchen facing the eastern skies, to enjoy a sun rise early in the morning can really enhance your day. To build character a person would be wise to start their day looking to the Son, “looking unto Jesus, the author, and finisher of our faith”. To begin our day with a fresh look into God’s word and allow Him to direct our steps is vital to building good character.

Another good idea is to have a study or family room away from distraction and noise. A good habit for every believer is to have a quiet place to be alone with God. When I think about quality time with God or loved ones, it almost always requires the least amount of distraction. A good home has a quiet room for lounging and a solid walk with the Lord requires a focused and unhindered time.

A good layout of a house will have a backyard that is private and safe, “He makes me to lie down in green pastures, I will fear no evil, for You are with me, your rod and Your staff, they comfort me”. The security of eternal life gives us Hope and comforts us even when trouble is right on the other side of the fence. “And by understanding it is established”, can mean that when we know that our Redeemer lives, we can say with blessed assurance, we are safe.

Finally, a well-designed house has plenty of lighting. From the time we pull into the driveway until we are safely inside, we should be able to walk without tripping and falling. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”, This is essential to building good character. When the Light of God’s word shines, we have spiritual insight and we make good decisions. This will keep us from stumbling and falling in a world full of pitfalls.

We may never have our dream home, but we can certainly plan to keep ourselves from harm and destruction. Building a life that honors and glorifies God is in our midst, we have the “Blueprints” and know that “Through wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established”. Amen!
