Big Woopty Doo

“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels,

That the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.”

2 Corinthians 4:7

What would you consider your greatest possession? What’s the one thing you would never trade away? I remember as a kid having a favorite toy, there were many attempts by my friends to trade it to them for something else. They would propose their best offer, “I’ll even give you my…”, my response, “Big Woopty Doo”.

I’ve developed a way of thinking that makes it easy for me to keep myself from falling into temptation. Because of the great value I place on my salvation and the price that was paid for my soul, it has become to me, priceless. Not that I can lose my salvation but rather, forfeit the peace of God that is present when I hold His ways higher than mine. This treasure, in an earthen vessel is worth way more to me then a temporary pleasure that will leave me wanting and unsatisfied.

I wish I could say that I always apply this way of thinking, but I don’t. That’s where one of the most important benefits of the Christian life come into play, forgiveness. When the Spirit of God empresses on me the conviction by allowing me to experience anxiety and fear, I know that something is not right. The practice of confession and repentance will restore my peace and joy.

I’m addressing those times of willful disobedience because of the desires of the flesh and the cunning tricks of enemy. There are times when things in life happen that are not in our control and the comfort of Jesus is something that can heal us and restore us. To be willing to trade our peace for the temporal can happen when we lose sight of how valuable our position in Christ is. The preceding verse in 2nd Corinthians 4 gives us a glimpse of our standing in Christ.

For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

This is the “treasure in earthen vessels” that will keep us from falling, “That the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us”. It’s the power of God that keeps us from being oppressed.

“We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed, we are perplexed, but not in despair, persecuted, but not forsaken, struck down, but not destroyed.”

So, the next time the flesh wants to make a trade with something that looks enticing, tell it, “Big Woopty Doo” and hit the road. Amen!
