Behold the Lamb

“Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” — John 1:29b

Coming away from the Christmas season, I’m thinking back to the account of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth. “And it happened, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit” (Luke 1:41). That was John the Baptists first meeting with Jesus. The next time we see the two together is some 30 years later when John is baptizing. The anticipation of the reconciliation between God and man is now a reality,

“Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!”

What the people didn’t know was the sin nature we all inherit was about to be once and for all done away with. Jesus came to take away the “Sin” of the world, singular. The root to all evil that infects us all. The Lamb of God, the one Abraham spoke of when his son Isaac asked for the sin offering thousands of years prior. “Behold the Lamb,” to receive the forgiveness of our sins and to come to that point of repentance and confess that Jesus is Lord.

God made provision by sending the perfect “Lamb of God.” We as believers have had the root of our sin nature cut and detached from having a hold on us, “Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin” (Romans 6:6). The body of sin is done away with!

The problem is some of us still walk around as if the sin still controlled us, we give in to temptations and feed into our flesh which can become a fellowship killer. Our trespasses towards one another not only cause a break in fellowship with our brothers and sisters but we can also have broken fellowship with God. Our relationship never changes but we can experience a loss of the joy and peace that accompany a right relationship. Fortunately God has made a way of restoration, confess and repent. When we confess our transgressions to one another forgiveness is only complete when there is repentance. If a person sins against us and never repents our job is to always have an attitude of forgiveness, ready to re-establish fellowship the moment the wrong is made right. “And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day returns to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him” (Luke 7:4).

If you’re having trouble asking or giving forgiveness, “Behold the Lamb”. Jesus died as an atonement for our sin, when we walk is the forgiveness God provides why wouldn’t we want to confess and repent? Wipe the slate clean and continue the sweet fellowship with God and man. Amen!
