An Offer I Couldn’t Refuse

Then Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you also want to go away?” But Simon Peter answered Him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. — John 6:67,68

There’s a saying that if something sounds too good to be true, it is too good to be true. I think most of us can look back at a time when the Lord called us unto Himself and it was as if there was no other choice but to follow Him. For some it was easy, trading our sorrows and pain for peace and joy. I know others who, at first didn’t see what the big deal was, why do I need a Savior?

As I follow the sequence of events that unfold in John chapter 6, I can see that there were those that could see that the words of Eternal life were being spoken and could even see the Man speaking them. Others saw a free meal and didn’t want to walk away from this life, Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.” Verses 67,68 are preceded by what I think is the saddest verse in the Bible, John 6:66 “From that time many of His disciples went back and walked with Him no more”.

I wonder what makes the difference between offers accepted or ones refused. When I received my call from the Lord it was as if there was no other choice, repent and be saved or wait for a better deal. It was like a scene from the Godfather, but it was the Lord who said, “I made him an offer he couldn’t refuse.” All of the doubt was removed, the time and place was set, and like a child who was looking for his Daddy, I finally saw Him, how could I say no?

I’m sitting here writing this on Father’s Day, and although my earthly father is long gone and I still miss him, My Heavenly Father is what I am enjoying today. I have an inheritance that will give me Eternal life, peace and joy that will keep me sane and have been delivered into a personal relationship that is better then what I thought.

Like the remaining disciples that stayed with Jesus, we too know that He has the words of Eternal life and it’s as true today as the time I first believed, even though sometimes I don’t understand. Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?” Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”

I praise God today who made me “An Offer I Couldn’t Refuse” Amen!
